According to newly leaked information, Apple’s latest A18 chips will have a much more powerful NPU than the M4 chips. The next-generation Apple iPhone 16 models will make a significant leap in AI performance with the developed A18 and A18 Pro chips. So, how will this impact users? Here are the details…
Apple A18 chips will give iPhone 16 more power than M4s
The well-known leaker Mapple Gold revealed that the iPhone 16 models will be more powerful than we thought. Apple’s new A18 and A18 Pro chips could surprise those waiting for AI performance. These new chips will surpass the 38 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) power offered by the recently released M4 chips. For comparison, the current A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max offers 35 TOPS. This means that AI operations will be much faster and more efficient with the A18 chips.
The new iPhone 16 models will come with a minimum of 8 GB of RAM required for AI operations. This was a missing feature in the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models. Therefore, these models could not fully utilize the Apple Intelligence feature of iOS 18. Now, all iPhone 16 models will come with 8 GB of RAM, which will multiply AI performance.
Apple will produce the A18 chips using TSMC’s second-generation 3 nm production process, N3E. The currently used A17 Pro chips are produced with TSMC’s first-generation 3 nm process, NB. The new generation production process will make the chips more efficient and powerful. This will take the performance of the iPhone 16 to the peak.
Along with the new chips, Apple also plans to change its marketing terminology. Instead of words like “powerful” and “more efficient,” it prefers to express their performance with more specific and technical terms. More accurate definitions may also be part of Apple’s effort to provide more transparent and accurate information to its users.
